Things Phil Brown must surely have in his house….

A Japanese themed room, with those thin paper wall things. He practices Tai-chi in it every day, with a “rising sun” bandana on.

Crocodile posing pouch, he calls it ‘The Happy Snapper’.

A signed photo of the time he met Peter Stringfellow….its signed by Phil Brown, not Stringfellow.

A state of the art toilet bowl, the Japanese one that sprays warm water up your hoop after you’ve had a shit and then a blast of warm air and a spray of Hi-Karate on each cheek.

Above his fire sits an oil painting of himself sat in a throne, dressed in a crown, red robes and wearing a golden headset complete with mircophone.

A1 colour photo of him and Allardyce shadow boxing (both wearing headsets), next to his framed A1 photo of Ali knocking down Foreman.

A wall mounted samurai sword (or Conan the Barbarian style sword) above the marble mantelpiece.

145 copies of the Gideon’s bible….Phil Brown NEVER looks a gift horse in the mouth.

A Top Gear style cool wall which Phil uses to rate players.

Anyone get the impression that Phil Brown’s new years resolution for 2010 was to “tone it down”!?!?

PHIL….FOR GODSAKE DO SOMETHING WILL YOU MAN!!!

A fact: An application I have on my Facebook determined that in 2009, the two most used words used in my status updates were: 1) Phil….and 2) Brown.

This guy is AMAZING….and I mean in a pure, punch the air in sheer victory Judd Nelson style at his antics, AMAZING.

My favoruite moment of the whole of 2009 was the story of how Phil ‘saved a woman’ from jumping off a bridge. The killer comment being : “She had no business being up there on that bridge….unless she were a football squad looking for inspiration”. Phil had of course took his team (Hull FC, non-football peoples) on a jog up the bridge for “inspiration” because (and I quote) “I am from the river, well the Tyne….i’m from the river and I gain strength from it”.

Classic.

The story goes that they encountered this suicidal woman ready to lob herself to oblivion and Phil talked her down.

Brilliant.

For the last few months though it’s as if Phil has lost his mojo. When’s he going to make his move on 2010 with some badass shit!? I’m waiting in anticipation at what he does next, knowing that whatever it is, it will be GLORIOUS!!!

Until then I just come back to the same old daydream. Me and Phil Brown watching ‘Game of Death’ on a leather sofa, both wearing matching black silk robes with dragons embroidered on the back. Nunchucks hanging nonchalantly from both our shoulders, flanked by stuffed Tigers that Phil and I have personally hunted down.

Ahh….

New Liverpool Central Station.

Central Station has looked in need of major improvement for decades now. Looks like it’s finally going to be sorted out. They’ve already put a new Merseytravel shop and ticket office in place but theres more to come.

As i’ve already alluded to below, Merepark has permission to redevelop the top of the Central Station concourse. It will see a glass roof added on top of the centre of the station, and a series of escalators and floors linking the station with a plaza.

The plaza will act as a crucial link between the Lewis’s building and the boardwalk part of the development.

The boardwalk, which already has permission, will have a number of shops and restaurants fronting out onto an extended water feature, which it is hoped will become a key leisure destination.

R.I.P. Lewis’s – Hello Central Village!

Slightly depressing news about the end of an era in Liverpool with the demise of Lewis’s department store. They did well to hold on as long as they did though, in the face of the roads around it being ripped up for the best part of a year as part of the ‘Big Dig’ road improvements. On top of this not one, but two top class department stores opened up in Liverpool One, in Debenhams and Jon Lewis.

What next for the Lewis’s building then!? Well, planning permission has been granted for the following….

The front end of the building will be cleaned up considerably from the dirty, carbon stained stonework currently letting the building down.

Down the centre of the building will run a new, glass roofed central atrium cutting through the building out to a newly created courtyard with cafes and greenery. Should be a nice spot to sit and eat and drink.

Running down the back of Bold Street will be a new scheme called ‘The Boardwalk’ as part of a new development tying in to a new Liverpool Central Station complex. A whole new shopping district will be developed as part of this called ‘Central Village.

Heres another viewpoint of what that courtyard at the back of Lewis’s is going to look like. You can see that part of the Central Village scheme will be two tall glass towers. These will be mixed use, office space, retail, apartments and no doubt the usual cafe’s and clothes shops on the ground floor. Apparantly a new Cinema is also planned for this.

Another view of the towers and the retail element of the scheme. A long water feature will run down the length of this scheme.

….looks pretty good to me.

A bit more info about the scheme: This is a 160 million pound masterplan by a company called Merepak taking in a large estate in mid-town Liverpool including the Lewis’s site, Central Station and the whole of the length of the back of Bold Street. Planning permission is passed and it’s now up to the developer to get started. Preparatory works have already begun on the back of Bold Street and to parts of Central Station.

Sporting Lisbon 3 – Everton 0

What can be said about that shocking performance, except the best side won fair and square and we were totally and utterly SHITE.

Oh and….Senderos and Joey Yobo: The best comedy pairing since Pryor & Wilder in ‘See no Evil’.

Jesus wept! *slaps forehead*

I thought that looked familliar.

R.I.P. CDJ

A fond farewell to the CDJ 1000, which is following the legendary Technics SL1200 to the Turntable graveyard. The “industry standard” deck (read: The first really usable in a propper DJ’ing capacity CD turntable) is being discontinued in the shops as we speak. When current stocks run out that will be it and you’ll no longer be able to get your hands on what must surely be the second best turntable, CD or Vinyl based, ever made. Design-wise the CDJ was an icon of 20th century design, up there with the SL1200, the walkman and the ipod.

“New species”….

Pioneer will now concentrate on the new flagship of their high end Pro DJ range, the “new species” (read: £3000 per pair) CDJ 2000. I reckon Pioneer have completely misread the market for DJ’ing equipment based purely on price point. Who’s got 3 grand to spend on CD turntables (CD’s being a 1990’s technology). Addmitedly the addition of the Rekordbox software that comes with the 2000’s brings the package somewhat up to date in terms of computer based DJ’ing, i’m still failing to see why you wouldn’t prefer to spend half the amount of a pair of these decks on a decent laptop and Ableton or Traktor/Serato.

3 grand is a lot to pay for what then is essentially very expensive Pioneer CDJ midi controllers (unless im missing something vital here?). With controllers like the various ‘Itch’ midi decks, the various Ableton controllers and with DVS systems becoming ever more popular I can see Pioneer having to cut the price of these decks agressively, or risk loosing their “industry standard” status as most installed equipment in club and home DJ booths.
